Brevard RC Drifters - Take II!
04/23/09 at 9:07pm

Hey guys just wanted to let you know that R/C drifting has returned to Brevard.  There has been a change of venue though - we are no longer drifting at Palm Bay Harley Davidson, as their VTA series is in full swing.  We are now drifting at Hobbytown on 192 in Melbourne.  The second and fourth Sunday of the month, we will be out there.  Again, like at PB HD, no generators, and electric only.  However, this is for you extreme R/C guys - no race trailer setups allowed, we want it to be somewhat mellow!  I will have more information such as schedule and a flyer on Saturday night, so stay tuned.  I hope you guys are ready for some drifting!

Well kinda !....... Although Brevard RC DRifters is no longer offering drifting...at least for the short term....we are still an active club under the name Brevard Electric Auto Racers. This new group has no affiliation with us. Our location still offers some of the best RC racing in the local area and if drifting shows signs of a healthier life we will pursue a drifting program again IN ADDITION to our racing program. Any and all drifters are welcome to come join us and if the numbers work we could always set aside specific weekends just for drifting. We wish the new group well but felt the need to clarify any ties, or the lack of, to them. If you drift, give us a shout out....get some bodies to commit and we'll be there for you.

I call shenanigans on that Dino.  You told me we are not going to have time for drifting at PB Harley as you want to pursue VTA racing (at least no drifting without some huge turnout of drifters).  I've told drifters I know not to show up because you have said there would not be any time for it and you want to focus on VTA.  I told you last week about this happening; and I told you that if you definitely accommodate drifting and VTA, I'll be there for both, but if I can only choose one (which you are forcing my hand towards), I am choosing drifting.

Rob, there has never been a time when I ever said drifting would not be welcome or we wouldnt pursue it IF we had a reasonable guess there would be more than a handful of people. I agree that I have said there would be no emphasis AT THIS TIME to integrate drifting with our race program simply because the race program is new and deserves our full attention. If you remember it was on your advice that we try a RCGT based program in addition to strictly VTA. I agreed and we have done so. Clearly this will need our full attention and since drifting is currently in what appears to be a lull, it would make no sense to pursue it when other programs are showing a substantial interest level. My offer stands....IF drifting interest becomes greater we would be more than willing to offer it as part of the club effort......whether it be on the same days as the race program or on one or both of the available other weekends. You unfortunately did not consider these options and went elsewhere to force the issue. You never even asked about alternatives. The next thing I know youre telling me Hobbytown is going to offer drifting and then you post here as if we have abandoned it. I've always said the same thing.....GET MORE PEOPLE INVOLVED AND THE PROGRAM WILL LIVE. That wasnt happening and the downturn in activity is evident even here on SFLRCDRIFT. Not only with us but in other areas. My goal has always been to offer a program with growth potential......drifting simply wasnt showing that AT THIS TIME. I hope that changes but even you have noticed it. Your comment on the Pt St Lucie thread was true...."it seems all the drifters are disappearing". I simply want more for the investment I've made and I want to have a successful program that MANY people can enjoy.

So, AT THIS TIME you are abandoning drifting?  How am I supposed to GET MORE PEOPLE INVOLVED and show up if I can't guarantee that they will have track time for drifting and judged runs (which are needed to keep things fun!). You noticed that it is very hard to drift on the track with guys racing and the race guys (like the new guy with the vette) don't want to share time and will complain about us being on the track.

How many people are you going to need to see for us to get drifting?  I'm not even saying give up on VTA/RCGT (I consider them the same and only suggested the RCGT so we could run more than just 3 muscle car bodies), just don't do what you have and ditch us drifters.  I told you when I started R/C drifting, and when you started the VTA program, drifting is my favorite part of R/C.  And you cannot say that I am not trying to work with you on this, I am even giving this VTA stuff a shot (against my taste in cars).  I bought four more chassis just for VTA (one for me, one for Lucy, one for her dad, and one for my dad) and have raced with you so far and will be showing up Sunday to race, but I don't want to not have drift time.  Why can't we have one Sunday be drifting and the other VTA/RCGT?

Not abandoning it....I said you posted here AS If we had abandoned it. Drifting is welcome.....just get more people to show up. Get 10 people involved and I'll even show up with the track on 1 additional Sunday per month. As for VTA/RCGT....it will remain on the 2nd and 4th Sunday. It doesn't make sense to try them on the same day. Some people would have to make the choice between the 2 cars since they might only be able to afford 1. Not so easy to swap the same chassis around during 1 day. In addition there will be some people who only want to run 1 or the other. My hope is that each class gets big enough so that combining them in 1 day would be impossible.

Dino, how is not having a day or track time available for drifting not abandoning it? Again, how am I supposed to get people to show up when I can't guarantee a track?  Also, we don't have 10 people showing up for VTA/RCGT, why the double standard for drifting?  I'm lost on these things here, call me if you can explain it better over the phone.

All I'm saying make the 2nd Sunday Drifting and 4th VTA/RCGT (or vice versa, I don't care).  How is that too bad?  People will have plenty of time to get a car ready for whichever day it is.  I really don't want to start another program in such a small area.  Also, if you do them on alternating days, then you may get some people to do both.  Right now, you are preparing to drop me, Joe, Joe's family, Lucy (I know she didn't drift much, but she does enjoy it),Lucy's Dad (who is just starting, and always liked drifting and racing) and Derek (who is looking for competition - race or drift, not practice).

Dont have 10...yet. But the potential for VTA/RCGT is much better given the national interest. And 10 is actually a joke. No program can survive on that. look at the forum !! 1 or 2 people quit and bye-bye drift sessions in multiple locations. If I thought for a minute that I wont get more than 10 for VTA I'd chuck all this now. I have much greater aspirations. The club will never be able to satisfy everyones needs but we have to be aware of trends and drifting is on a downswing as you yourself have noticed.
Based on all the people you mentioned it sounds like you have enough to start a good program now and have already made moves in that direction....why not pursue it ? It sounds like you have the golden egg offered to you by Hobbytown. I know racing isnt your cup of tea but unfortunately you're part of a minority and as i keep trying to illustrate....the club MUST find venues that will allow growth. Get things rolling, promote it, manage it, invest in it and make it whatever you want.
I'm tapped out. I know you believe in what you want and I cant argue with it. If you all end up at hobbytown I fully understand. I'm confident we'll still be here because, just like you, I believe in what VTA has to offer.

Today was a fun day at hobby town.  It was good to see some fresh faces and familiar friends!  We'll be out there again on the third Sunday of every month starting in June.

it is nice to see that we can all act like adults in this supposed vta eat drift world,  even though this is a drift forum not a VTA but don't want to start any drama, bc i am friends with everyone and my family and myself love drifting more then the VTA and we have all given it a fare chance. my family and i had a lot of fun this weekend @ hobby town even my wife started to practice on the track. hobbytown has opened a lot of new opportunities for the area it is nice to see that there are some people as dedicated to VTA like we are to drifting if we hear of interested people for VTA we will send them your way and hope that you will do the same for us. like we sent you a guy from hobbytown that bought a tc5 rtr w/ VTA spec's hope he stop'd bye or will stop bye...

Just a few more weeks until the next drift day (June 21) - hope to see you guys out there!  Also, we are going to start a point series up here.  Every month will have a competition and it will be totaled throughout the year.
